Another EduProtocol: Bookakucha

Imagine transforming the traditional book talk into an engaging, student-driven experience. Welcome to BookaKucha, a dynamic book presentation format inspired by the popular Pecha-Kucha style, crafted by Jon Corippo and Marlena Hebern in their book EduProtocols.

What is BookaKucha?

BookaKucha is a streamlined, classroom-friendly adaptation of PechaKucha, the world-renowned storytelling format known for its brevity and impact. In a typical PechaKucha session, presenters share their stories through 20 slides, each accompanied by 20 seconds of commentary. It’s the perfect blend of efficiency and creativity, often described as what “Show and Tell” always aspired to be.

BookaKucha simplifies this even further for educational settings. Students create three slides about the book they are currently reading and present them with a 20-second commentary per slide. The entire presentation takes just about a minute, making it a quick yet powerful way to share insights and recommendations.

How Does It Work?

Slide Creation:

Students prepare up to three slides in response to a specific prompt related to the book they’re reading. This process takes about 10 minutes.
Presentation: Each student presents their slides, with each slide shown for 20 seconds. For younger students, teachers can pre-fill the title and author pages, or use a shared reading book until they are ready to present independently.

Why Choose BookaKucha?

BookaKucha shifts the traditional book talk from teacher-led to student-driven, fostering a culture of peer recommendations. This peer-to-peer sharing is crucial in building a vibrant reading community within the classroom. Students are more likely to pick up books recommended by their friends, enhancing their reading experience and encouraging a lifelong love of reading.

The Benefits of a Reading Culture

Creating a reading culture in schools is a collective effort. When students actively participate in book talks and recommend books to each other, they contribute to a literate and engaged student body. Encouraging reading for pleasure has a significant impact on students’ future success, making BookaKucha an invaluable tool in any educator’s arsenal.

So, let your students take the stage with BookaKucha. It’s a fun, efficient, and powerful way to promote reading and build a strong, literate community in your classroom.
