Book Review: The Infused AI Classroom by Holly Clark

The AI Infused Classroom

In 2023, I had the pleasure of connecting with Holly Clark (her website) during a training session she conducted at our BOCES. Being part of the planning team for this AI-focused professional development was a delight, as our conversations were both meaningful and fun. Having organized several conferences, I can confidently say that Holly was one of the easiest presenters to collaborate with. She consistently prioritized our goals and needs, ensuring a smooth and impactful experience.

During this time, I significantly expanded my understanding of AI, particularly its application in education and for school librarians. In a sea of AI books being published almost daily, it can be challenging to find the truly valuable ones. What sets Holly’s book apart is its focus on pedagogy and the evolution of teaching and learning processes.

Unlike many AI books that emphasize tools, tips, and tricks, The AI Infused Classroom concentrates on techniques that are tool-agnostic. Holly emphasizes equipping both students and educators with the skills necessary to harness the transformative potential of AI. This approach makes the book a standout resource for anyone looking to integrate AI into their educational practices effectively.

Amazon Description:

Ready or not . . . AI is here. Now. And it has concerned and curious educators asking questions:

  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of artificial intelligence (AI) models, like ChatGPT?
  • How do ChatGPT and other large language models change things like the writing process?
  • What do we need to understand about large language models (LLMs) and AI’s ability to transform how—and how quickly—we can communicate with our students and peers?
  • How can we teach students to use AI appropriately and in ways that enhance their learning experiences?

Open-source, content-creating AI models are a relatively new addition to the education landscape—and they are the next step for digital tools. With more than twenty-five years of experience as an educator and as one of the first teachers in the United States to have a 1:1 classroom, bestselling author of the Infused Classroom series, Holly Clark, takes a future-oriented approach to technology integration in education. Through her training and speaking engagements, she equips educators worldwide to effectively use technology, including AI, in their classrooms. And now, with The AI Infused Classroom, she offers a thoughtful, practical guide for navigating the latest iteration of edtech.

The key to successfully integrating any digital tool, Clark says, is to focus on the deep learning and masterful pedagogy teachers can achieve with educational shifts, like the one the world is currently experiencing. Yes, things will change, but AI does not replace the need for well-trained and highly qualified teachers in the classroom. In fact, students need educators’ guidance, now more than ever, to ensure they are prepared for the world of AI.

With the right mindset, the right questions, and the right strategies, you can use AI to create and broaden meaningful learning experiences for every student.
