Creative Library Displays: Adding a Dynamic Twist

While scrolling through TikTok recently, I came across a fantastic video by @the.laser.libraria (definitely give her a follow if you’re on TikTok!). She shared a clever idea for Open House that works beautifully in both the library and classroom collections. You can check out the video here.

As a big fan of the resources from @thebookwrangler (Be sure to check him out too as he has tons of free resources), I was instantly inspired when she shared her own spin on this concept. Naturally, I put my own twist on the idea, and now I’m excited to share it with you! In the Canva template I created, you will find everything you need to recreate this display. What I love most about this display is how it works for both nonfiction and fiction books, making it versatile and engaging for students. Plus, it takes the concept of dynamic shelving and pushes it even further.

What is Dynamic Shelving?

Dynamic shelving is all about transforming library collections into something that’s fun and easy to explore. Gone are the days of neatly lined-up spines. Instead, dynamic shelving focuses on how often books are used, what students are interested in, and how to make collections more visually appealing.

If you want to dive deeper into dynamic shelving, check out these awesome blog posts from Kelsey Bogan: Part 1 and Part 2

Here are a few dynamic shelving techniques that you can try:

  • Front-facing books: Show as many covers as you can to grab attention.
  • Thematic displays: Group books by themes or series to make browsing more intuitive.
  • Add decorations: Use signs, toys, or props that tie into the books to make displays more fun.
  • Seasonal themes: Switch up displays with holidays or seasons to keep things fresh and relevant.
  • Shelf-talkers: Add notes or tags to recommend books and guide readers.
  • Colorful backgrounds: Use graphic wallpaper or liners to make the shelves pop with color and style.

The ultimate goal is to create a welcoming space where readers can discover books independently, making the library more inviting and accessible.

What’s Inside the Canva Template?

To help you get started, I’ve created a Canva Template that includes everything you need for this display:

  • 2 Signs: Perfect for grabbing attention and setting the tone.
  • 9 ‘Hello, My Name Is’ Editable Pages: Available in various colors to match your display’s theme.
  • 22 Sneaker Pages: Each page features a different sneaker to keep things fun and fresh.

Dynamic shelving, paired with creative displays, can truly transform your library or classroom into an engaging and accessible space. The display idea I’ve shared not only showcases nonfiction and fiction books in a fresh way but also adds layers of interactivity and visual appeal that draw students in. By using eye-catching signs, fun themes, and elements like the ‘Hello, My Name Is’ tags or sneaker pages from the Canva template, you can create a display that is both functional and fun.

I hope this display inspires you to get creative and try new ways to make your collection stand out. Whether you follow the template exactly or add your own twist, the goal is to make browsing books an enjoyable experience for all readers. I would love to hear how you’re using this display in your space—let’s keep sharing ideas and making our libraries as dynamic and exciting as possible!
