EDU AI Tool: NotebookLM

Transform How You and Your Students Learn with NotebookLM from Google

Are you someone who loves listening to podcasts? Imagine turning the articles, videos, and resources you’re using for school into a podcast you can listen to on the go. Well, that’s exactly what Google’s NotebookLM can help you do! Launched in Spring 2023, it quietly flew under the radar but has immense potential for students and educators alike. Originally designed to connect and summarize multiple sources of information, its hidden power shines through with its AI-generated podcast feature.

As someone who spends a fair bit of time driving to different schools or districts, being able to consume information while on the move is a game changer. Whether you’re a busy educator or a student with a packed schedule, NotebookLM’s audio summaries are the perfect way to make the most of your time. Here’s how you can start using it today:

How Does NotebookLM Work?

Step 1: Select your resources—these can be YouTube videos, articles, PDFs, files from Google Drive, or even text you’ve copied and pasted.
Step 2: Head over to NotebookLM.
Step 3: Upload or add the resources you want to summarize or turn into a podcast.
Step 4: On the left-hand side, select which resources you want to combine.
Step 5: Click on the “Notebook Guide” button in the bottom right corner.
Step 6: When a new popup appears, you’ll have several options. To create a podcast, choose “Audio Overview.”

It’s that simple! In just a few clicks, you’ll have an AI-generated podcast that sounds surprisingly authentic. The voices are conversational and engaging, complete with personal anecdotes and unique interactions that humanize the discussion. This isn’t just a robotic reading of your text—it’s a thoughtful dialogue that’s easy to listen to while you’re on the move.

Why Use NotebookLM with Your Students?

This tool isn’t just convenient; it has real educational benefits. Here are a few ways it can enhance learning:

  • Great for auditory learners: Some students learn better by listening, and NotebookLM allows you to turn written materials into a format that suits their learning style.
  • Multi-tasking made easy: Students and educators can now review material while commuting, exercising, or even doing chores—making learning flexible and accessible.
  • Efficient information synthesis: NotebookLM helps students consolidate information from various sources into a single, coherent podcast or summary, which is especially helpful when preparing for exams or projects.
  • Deepen engagement: The AI-generated podcast doesn’t just repeat facts; it brings them to life by discussing them in a conversational format, which can help with retention and understanding.
